Welcome to the Farm!
At Oishimon we strive to provide salad greens & anything that goes well with salads to anyone who appreciates organically grown food. Our goal is to create value chains that will allow everybody to have access to deliciously safe and fresh vegetables.
The farm is run by me, Simon Ruhe, a Dutch farming enthusiast. I have always thought about becoming a farmer, so I pursued a Bachelor of Applied Sciences in organic agriculture and value chains at the Van Hall Larenstein University in the Netherlands. During this time, I also did various internships at sustainable (organic) farms in Japan.
Through these internships I identified the charm and many challenges (or, as I see them, opportunities) the Japanese agriculture sector is facing, including:
- Aging farmer population (65% of the population of farmers are aged 65 years and older.)
- Negative effects of climate change (more extreme weather)
- Fluctuating vegetable prices
- Little innovation and scaling
This together with my interest in Japan made the decision to start my own organic farm all the more easy after I graduated. My vision is to create a future where everybody has access to safe and affordable organically grown produce. To achieve this, I am introducing modern methods of sustainable agriculture alongside the tried and true techniques of organic farmers.
The increase in temperature due to increased CO2 emissions affects the climate worldwide, droughts and flooding due to heavy rains will increase as the weather becomes more extreme. Organic farming is part of the solutions as it has the potential to slow down the negative impacts on the climate which already threatens our way of life.
